Environmental safety of construction at the objects, being restored by USIF
USIF cares about lives and health of the residents of the partner communities and monitors the environmental safety at social facilities where construction works funded by USIF are executed.
One of the main components of environmentally friendly construction is a proper handling of hazardous wastes of construction materials, containing asbestos. Such materials are, in particular, asbestos-cement sheets, some thermal insulation materials, mastics, sealants, mixtures and others.
Asbestos fibers are very harmful to health. Upon contact with the respiratory organs, they can cause serious diseases, including cancer. In a number of countries, including EU member-states, use of asbestos-containing materials is prohibited, and they are subject to enhanced safety requirements.
In the framework of cooperation with the Government of Germany and KfW, appropriate procedures for handling of asbestos-containing materials were introduced by USIF. During dismantling works, measures are taken to minimize the dangerous effects of asbestos fibers: providing workers with personal protective equipment, careful (without destruction and release into the environment of asbestos fibers) removal of slate sheets, their tight packaging and subsequent transportation by specialized companies, licensed to handle hazardous wastes and their safe disposal.
